In Fourteen Hundred Ninety-Two...

This morning, like every Monday morning, I gathered together the trash from my apartment, tied the bag securely shut, and marched down the three flights of stairs to place it on the curb. My inner monologue upon exiting the house:

Why does no one else have their trash out? Did the truck already swing by? That can't be - it's not even 8am. Hmmm....Oh wait...It's Columbus Day.

I proceeded to march right back up the three flights of stairs.

After work I hopped on the subway to commute home. It was an unusually warm day and I found myself with a longer than normal wait. My inner monologue:

Where is the train? I don't even see the light at the end of the tunnel from the next approaching one. (plays with iPhone, plays with iPhone) Finally! Hmmm...how come this train isn't crowded? How come the body odor is at a tolerable level? Oh wait...it's Columbus Day.

Then I marched on home, marched up the three flights of stairs (for the 2nd time), and because I am a gourmand, made myself a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for dinner. I decided to fight the Monday evening sluggishness by checking out a new class in my neighborhood. I walked down the street and stopped outside the building. My inner monologue:

Hmmm...how come the lights aren't on? Is the entrance around the back? Is this the right address?? Is this the right time? Am I losing it?? Oh wait...it's Columbus Day

I then marched on home, and for the third time today, marched up the three flights of stairs.

Thank you Christopher Columbus.

WHY do we even bother with that sham of a holiday? Haven't we established that:
1) other explorers got here first?
2) he landed in "the Americas" but not what we now know as "the continental United States of" same?
3) he and his cohorts brought all sorts of nasty diseases with them?
4) there were a lot of people who were already here?
